The ionosphere is the layer of Earth's atmosphere that contains ions and free electrons, making it reflective to radio waves. This property is crucial for long-distance radio communication, as radio waves bounce off this layer back to Earth's surface rather than passing through to space.

Sound is a mechanical wave that requires a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to propagate. A vacuum is the absence of any medium, so sound cannot travel through it. Sound can travel through water, steel, and air, making vacuum the only correct answer.
