s-Block Elements

Helium (He) is a noble gas with electron configuration 1s², placing it in the p-block of the periodic table (Group 18). While it fills the 1s orbital, helium is classified with other noble gases due to its similar chemical properties. Cs, Mg, and Ca are all s-block elements - Cs is in Group 1 (alkali metals) while Mg and Ca are in Group 2 (alkaline earth metals).

Cesium (Cs) forms a stable superoxide (CsO₂) due to its large ionic radius, which can stabilize the larger superoxide ion (O₂⁻). Among alkali metals, the stability of superoxides increases down the group - potassium, rubidium, and cesium form superoxides, while lithium forms only the oxide and sodium forms primarily the peroxide. Ba is an alkaline earth metal.

Magnesium (Mg) and beryllium do not show characteristic flame colors because the energy gap between their ground and excited states is too large to be bridged by flame energy. Other alkaline earth metals (Ba, Ca, Sr) give distinctive flame colors - barium (green), calcium (brick red), and strontium (crimson red). This property is why Mg is used in flares and fireworks to produce bright white light without color.

Alkali metals in liquid ammonia (NH₃) produce characteristic blue-colored solutions due to solvated electrons. This occurs when alkali metals dissolve in liquid ammonia, forming metal cations and free electrons that become solvated, giving intense blue coloration in dilute solutions. The color changes to bronze/copper in concentrated solutions. This is a distinctive property demonstrating ammonia's ability to stabilize electrons.

The Solvay process (or Solvey process) is primarily used for the industrial manufacture of sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃, soda ash). This involves the reaction of sodium chloride with ammonia and carbon dioxide to form sodium bicarbonate, which is then heated to produce sodium carbonate. NaOH is typically produced by electrolysis, CaOCl₂ (bleaching powder) from chlorine and lime, and NH₃ by Haber process.

Microcosmic salt is sodium ammonium hydrogen phosphate tetrahydrate, with the formula Na(NH₄)HPO₄·4H₂O. It crystallizes in characteristic tetrahedral shapes and is used in qualitative analysis for detecting cations through flame tests. The exact number of water molecules (4) is crucial for identification. This salt forms when equimolar solutions of sodium phosphate and ammonium phosphate are mixed.

Among alkaline earth carbonates, solubility increases down the group. BeCO3 has the highest solubility due to the very small size and high charge density of Be²+ ion, which gives it exceptional hydration energy that overcomes lattice energy. MgCO3, CaCO3, and SrCO3 are progressively less soluble. SrSO4 is a sulfate (not carbonate) and is actually insoluble.

Carnallite is a naturally occurring mineral with the chemical formula KCl·MgCl₂·6H₂O. It is an important source of potassium and magnesium. Option A is borax, B is dolomite, and D is cryolite.

Epsom salt is the common name for magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, MgSO₄·7H₂O. It has been used traditionally as a bath salt for muscle relaxation. Option A is incorrect hydration state, B is gypsum, and C is washing soda.

James Chadwick discovered the neutron in 1932 using beryllium-9 bombarded with alpha particles from polonium. The nuclear reaction was ⁴He₂ + ⁹Be₄ → ¹²C₆ + ¹n₀. This produced neutral radiation that was identified as neutrons.

BeO, Al₂O₃, and ZnO are amphoteric oxides - they react with both acids and bases. CaO is a basic oxide that only reacts with acids to form salts and water. It does not react with bases.

Diagonal relationships exist between elements diagonally adjacent in the periodic table: Li-Mg (1st period, 1st group to 2nd period, 2nd group), Be-Al (2nd period, 2nd group to 3rd period, 3rd group), and B-Si (2nd period, 3rd group to 3rd period, 4th group). Li-Be are in the same period and do NOT show diagonal relationship.

Calcium carbide (CaC₂) reacts with water to produce acetylene gas (C₂H₂) and calcium hydroxide: CaC₂ + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + C₂H₂. Beryllium carbide (Be₂C) and aluminum carbide (Al₄C₃) produce methane (CH₄), not acetylene, when hydrolyzed. Therefore 'All of these' is incorrect.

Chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis in plants, contains a magnesium ion (Mg²+) at the center of its porphyrin ring structure. This central Mg is crucial for chlorophyll's ability to absorb light energy.

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulfate hemihydrate with the formula CaSO₄·½H₂O (or written as 2CaSO₄·H₂O). When mixed with water, it forms gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) and hardens. Option B is already gypsum, while C and D have incorrect water content.

Baking soda is the common name for sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃). It is used in baking as a leavening agent because it decomposes on heating to release CO₂. Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) is washing soda, and sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) is Glauber's salt.

Beryllium (Be) predominantly forms covalent compounds due to its very small atomic size and high ionization energy, which gives it high polarizing power (Fajan's rules). This allows Be to distort electron clouds of anions and form electron-sharing bonds rather than pure ionic bonds. Mg, Cs, and Na typically form ionic compounds.

Li2CO3 decomposes on heating because Li+ is very small and polarizes the large CO3^2- ion, weakening the C-O bonds and causing decomposition into Li2O and CO2. Na2CO3 and K2CO3 are stable to heat due to larger cations with lower polarizing power, while CaO is already an oxide and cannot decompose further.

Soda ash is the common name for anhydrous sodium carbonate, Na2CO3. Option A is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), option B is washing crystals (hydrated sodium carbonate), and option C is caustic soda (sodium hydroxide).

Cesium (Cs) does not form a stable nitride due to its very large ionic radius and low charge density, which makes ionic bonding with N^3- unfavorable. Li, Mg, and Al readily form nitrides (Li3N, Mg3N2, AlN) due to their smaller size and higher charge density allowing stable ionic interactions.

Both Al and Be become passive in concentrated HNO3 because the acid forms a thin, protective oxide layer on their surface that prevents further reaction. This passivation is characteristic of metals that form amphoteric oxides and occurs only with concentrated nitric acid.

CaCl2 is an excellent desiccant due to its high hygroscopicity - it readily absorbs water vapor from the air to form hydrated species. Na2CO3 can absorb some water but is less effective, NaCl is not hygroscopic enough, and Na2SO4 is used as a drying agent only after initial drying, not as a primary desiccator.

Na3AlF6 (cryolite) is used in the Hall-Heroult process for aluminum extraction because it dissolves Al2O3 at much lower temperatures (≈1000°C) than pure Al2O3 would melt (>2000°C), making electrolysis feasible. CaF2 is used as a flux in steelmaking, CaCl2 is a drying agent, and SiO2 is a component of the cell lining but not the flux.
