Food: Where Does It Come From - 1

Food is vital for living beings as it helps in the maintenance of the body by protecting us from diseases and regulating our body functions, by providing proper nutrition. It also helps the organisms in their proper growth. So, statement given in option (3), saying that food maintains our life and growth, is correct. 

Cooking makes the components of the food simpler and easily digestible by the body. Also, cooking of food kills various germs so, the food can be preserved for long. 

Radish, carrot, cucumber, onion, cabbage and beetroot are fibrous food items, which can be eaten raw as salad. Bitter gourd and pumpkin are not a part of salad. 

Different parts of different plants are used to obtain food products, such as seeds of mustard give oil, stem of sugarcane is processed to get sugar, leaves of mint and spinach are used directly. 

Ghee is obtained by processing of milk and milk is an animal product. Idli is made by using rice, urad dal, salt and water. Rice and urad dal are the products obtained from plants. Kheer requires milk, which is again an animal product. Chicken curry is made from chicken, which is also an animal source. Thus, it is idli only, which is prepared by using plant products. 

Buffalo is a milk yielding animal which feeds on plant products like grasses, oil cakes, hay, grains, etc. 

Carrot is the plant root which is used as food. Tomato and banana are the fruits of the plants. Pulses are the seeds of the plants. 

Honey is prepared by the honey bees. When a honey bee sits on a flower, it sucks the nectar of the flower and converts it to honey. 

Animals, according to their dietary habits, are of three types: flesh eating called carnivores, plant eating called herbivores, and both plant and flesh eating called omnivores. So, statements given in options (1) - (3) are correct. Hen is though a source of eggs but sheep is a wool yielding animal and thus, option (4) is incorrect. 

The seeds of mustard plants give oil and their leaves are used as a vegetable. So, the seeds and the leaves of a mustard plant are edible. 

Cucumber, tomato and brinjal are fruits, used as food, whereas it is the roots of the turnip plant which are used as food.

Plants are autotrophs. They can make their own food from inorganic raw materials like water and carbon dioxide obtained from their surroundings. Plants act as the source of food for all the birds and animals, including humans.
