Mainframe JCL and Terminology

In JCL (Job Control Language) for mainframe systems, the standard hierarchical order is: JOB statement first (identifies the job), followed by EXEC statements (define program execution steps), then DD statements (define data inputs/outputs). This order is mandatory for proper job execution.

JCL stands for Job Control Language, which is a scripting language used on IBM mainframe systems to define and execute jobs. The other options incorrectly use 'Controlling', 'Controls', or 'Controller' instead of 'Control'.

The JOB statement in JCL serves to identify the type of job being submitted to the system. When both JOBLIB and STEPLIB statements are coded in a step, STEPLIB takes precedence and is executed. STEPLIB overrides JOBLIB for that specific step. JOBLIB applies to the entire job, but STEPLIB has higher priority within a step.

The REGION keyword specifies both the amount of space required by a step and the amount of space required by a job. It controls the memory region allocation for both step-level and job-level execution in mainframe systems.

The //JCLLIB statement specifies the private libraries (partitioned data sets) that the z/OS system searches to locate include groups or cataloged procedures invoked by EXEC statements within the job. It overrides or supplements default system procedure libraries (like SYS1.PROCLIB) for the scope of the job.

VOL=SER specifies the volume serial number for a tape dataset. Cataloged datasets are tracked in the system catalog, which records their location. Uncataloged datasets require VOL=SER to tell the system which tape volume contains the dataset.
