The amniotic egg is the key evolutionary innovation that allowed reptiles (and later birds and mammals) to reproduce on land without dependence on water environments. The amniotic egg contains its own water supply and protects the embryo from desiccation. Scales provide protection but don't enable terrestrial reproduction. Increased size and food availability are not specific adaptations for land reproduction.

Natural selection is the process where individuals with advantageous traits survive and reproduce more successfully than others in a competitive environment. These beneficial traits are then passed to offspring, becoming more common in the population over generations. Adaptation is the outcome of this process, not the process itself. Darwin's theory is broader, encompassing natural selection as the key mechanism.

The first known bird, Archaeopteryx, appeared during the Jurassic period (approximately 150 million years ago). This transitional fossil shows both reptilian and avian characteristics, providing evidence for the evolution of birds from theropod dinosaurs. The Permian and Triassic periods predate birds, while the Cretaceous period saw further bird diversification.

The key difference is that genetic drift is random change in allele frequencies unrelated to fitness advantages, while natural selection involves differential survival based on competitive advantages. Genetic drift occurs through chance events (bottlenecks, founder effects) without requiring competition between organisms. Natural selection specifically requires competition where advantageous traits are favored.

A living fossil refers to an extant organism that has remained relatively unchanged over long geological periods and retains primitive characteristics of its ancestral group. Examples include coelacanths, horseshoe crabs, and ginkgo trees. These species appear similar to fossils from millions of years ago, hence the term. It does not refer to fossils themselves or animals about to become fossils.

Gene transcription is the process of making RNA from DNA - a routine cellular function that happens constantly and does not create genetic diversity. Gene duplication creates extra copies that can evolve new functions. Lateral gene transfer moves genes between species. Chromosomal rearrangements alter gene structure and regulation. The latter three processes increase genomic variation, while transcription merely maintains existing genetic information.

Fossils are the most evident source of evolution. Any relic or remains of prehistoric forms of life are known as fossils. The study of fossil records is known as palaeontology.

The Mesozoic Era (approximately 252-66 million years ago) is known as the Age of Reptiles, dominated by dinosaurs on land, pterosaurs in the air, and marine reptiles in the oceans. The Paleozoic Era preceded it and saw the rise of early reptiles. The Cenozoic Era is the Age of Mammals that followed. Cosmozoic is not a valid geological era.

August Weismann proposed the germplasm theory in the late 19th century, stating that inheritance is carried only by germ cells (gametes) and that somatic cells do not pass on acquired characteristics. This theory helped disprove Lamarckian inheritance. Mendel discovered inheritance laws but didn't propose germplasm theory. Lamarck proposed the inheritance of acquired characteristics that Weismann argued against.

Thomas Malthus wrote 'An Essay on the Principle of Population' (1798), arguing that human populations grow faster than resources can support. Darwin read this and realized its implications - competition for limited resources would lead to differential survival. This insight helped Darwin formulate natural selection. Lyell influenced Darwin's geological understanding, while Wallace independently conceived natural selection. Herbert Spencer later coined 'survival of the fittest'.

Lamarck in his book ‘Philosophic Zoologique' postulated that environment influenced the morphological characters and that these changes were inherited in the next generation.

The earliest form of fossil in the phylogeny of horse is Eohippus. The earliest horse had five-toed limbs whereas the present day or modern equus have one functional toe with a large hoof on each foot.

Palaeontology evidences are provided by Archaeopteryx. The earliest known bird in the fossil record is Archaeopteryx which means 'ancient wing'. It exhibited both reptilian and avian characters.

Melanisation in peppered moth does not favour the Lamarckian concept of inheritance of acquired characteristics. This concept of melanisation was put forward by Darwin.

Archaeopteryx fossils from the Jurassic period (approximately 150 million years ago) show a transitional form with both reptilian features (teeth, long bony tail, claws) and avian features (feathers, wishbone). This provided crucial evidence that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic. It was not a Triassic reptile, not a mammal, and did not appear in the Permian period.

Homo erectus fossils were discovered at both Java (Java Man/Trinil) and Zhoukoudian near Beijing (Peking Man). Eugène Dubois discovered Java Man in 1891, and Davidson Black discovered Peking Man in the 1920s. Neanderthal man is a separate species (Homo neanderthalensis).

The Great Oxygenation Event occurred during the Paleoproterozoic era, specifically the Orosirian period (approximately 2.4-2.0 billion years ago). Cyanobacteria began producing oxygen through photosynthesis, dramatically changing Earth's atmosphere. The Ediacaran period saw the first complex multicellular life. The Devonian is known as the Age of Fish. The Ordovician saw early marine diversification but occurred after oxygen levels were already established.
