Governor Generals and Viceroys

The First Anglo-French War (1748-1754) occurred before Robert Clive's active career in India. Clive's key achievements - the Dual Government in Bengal (1765), Treaty of Allahabad (1765), and occupation of Arcot (1751) - all came during the later Anglo-French conflicts (Second and Third Carnatic Wars). Clive was not involved in the First Anglo-French War.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place during the Viceroyalty of Lord Chelmsford.

Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak were imprisoned and exiled to Burma in 1907-1908 during Lord Minto's viceroyalty (1905-1910). This was part of the crackdown on extremist activities following the Partition of Bengal and Swadeshi movement. Both leaders were charged with sedition for their nationalist writings and speeches.

Jatin Das died after a 63-day hunger strike in 1929 during Lord Irwin's viceroyalty (1926-1931). He was protesting the inhumane treatment of political prisoners and demanding jail reforms. His death became a powerful symbol of revolutionary sacrifice and galvanized public opinion against colonial repression.

Macaulayism is the conscious policy of liquidating indigenous culture through the planned substitution of the alien culture of a colonizing power via the education system. Viceroy Linlithgow declared India at war with Germany on September 3, 1939.^[1] The Indian National Congress, the dominant political party of the time, objected strongly to the declaration of war without prior consultation with Indians. 

Dalhousie was keen on annexing the kingdom of Oudh (Awadh), but the task presented certain difficulties. Finally, Lord Dalhousie hit upon the idea of alleviating the plight of the people of Awadh. At last, it was annexed in 1856.

The first Subsidiary Alliance Treaty was signed in 1798 between Lord Wellesley and Nizam Ali Khan (Asaf Jah II), the ruler of Hyderabad. This treaty required the Nizam to maintain British troops and disband his own army, effectively making Hyderabad a British protectorate. Sikandar Jah ruled later (1803-1829), while Muzzafar Jang and Salabath Jang were from different periods.
