Soil

Weathering is the natural process of breakdown and alteration of rocks and minerals at or near the Earth's surface through physical, chemical, and biological processes. This causes rocks to break into smaller particles over time.

Soil is the uppermost layer of the Earth's crust that supports plant life. It forms from the weathering of rocks and contains organic matter, minerals, air, and water. The deepest layer is bedrock, and there's no distinct 'mid layer' terminology in basic soil science.

Loamy soil is a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay with abundant organic matter (humus). Sandy soil has large particles with low humus retention. Clayey soil has fine particles but can become compacted. Loam's balanced composition makes it ideal for humus accumulation and plant growth.

Clay particles are the finest among soil particle sizes, typically less than 0.002mm in diameter. Silt particles are larger (0.002-0.05mm), sand even larger (0.05-2mm), and gravel is the coarsest (>2mm). The smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area and water-holding capacity.

Sandy soil has large particles with large pore spaces, which allows water to drain quickly rather than being retained. This low water-holding capacity is the main disadvantage. The other options describe advantages or neutral characteristics of sandy soil.

Sandy soil, particularly in the form of loess, is commonly transported and deposited by wind. This creates wind-borne deposits found in many parts of the world. Alluvial soil is water-deposited, colonial soil is not a standard classification, and glacial soil is deposited by glaciers.

Plants are producers, not decomposers. They do not break down organic matter; rather, they contribute organic matter to soil through leaf litter and root death. Fungi, bacteria, and earthworms are all decomposers that break down organic material, recycling nutrients back into the soil.

Topsoil (A-horizon) is the most fertile layer because it contains the highest concentration of organic matter, humus, nutrients, and biological activity. Subsoil (B-horizon) has less organic material. Bedrock and parent rock are unweathered or partially weathered rock with minimal fertility.

Percolation is the downward movement of water through soil under gravitational force. Absorption is uptake by plant roots or soil particles. Osmosis is water movement across semi-permeable membranes. Moisture is the state of holding water, not a movement process.

Topsoil is characterized by high organic content, including humus - the dark, organic material formed from decomposed plant and animal matter. It is softer, less compact, contains more living organisms, and is more fertile than subsoil. Option C correctly identifies this key feature.

Composting is a soil conservation practice that builds soil structure and fertility. It does NOT cause erosion - it actually helps prevent erosion by improving soil structure. Deforestation, overgrazing, and floods all accelerate soil erosion by removing protective vegetation or mechanically removing soil.

Option B is incorrect because higher absorption by soil means better water retention and greater availability to plants over time. Poor percolation (option A) does cause waterlogging, making it correct. Checking percolation (C) is important for plant growth. Soil does contain moisture (D) - all correct statements except B.

Loamy soil is an ideal mixture of sand, silt, and clay (roughly 40-40-20%) that combines the best properties: good drainage from sand, moisture retention from silt, and nutrient-holding capacity from clay. Sandy soil (A) drains too fast, clay (B) holds too much water and becomes waterlogged, and gravel (D) lacks fine particles for nutrient retention. Most crops thrive in loam.
