The first text message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3^rd December, 1992.

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a pair of United Nations-sponsored conferences about information, communication and, in broad terms, the information society. One of its chief aims was to bridge the so-called global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by spreading access to the Internet in the developing world. The conferences established 17 May as World Information Society Day.

PrasarBharti is India's largest public broadcaster. It is an autonomous body set up by an Act of Parliament and comprises Doordarshan television network and All India Radio which were earlier media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The Union Cabinet approved the National Telecom Policy in May, 2012, which is set to replace National Telecom Policy, 1999. This policy aims to do away with roaming charges, introduce a pan-India mobile permit that will enable mobile phone firms to offer all communication services, allow operators to share and trade spectrum and facilitate consolidation in the sector. Though included in the original draft, the approved policy made some changes which include scrapping the proposal to give more powers to the telecoms regulator and dropping plans to introduce a Spectrum Act, the legislation that would govern management, pricing and allocation of airwaves in the country.

In 2010, the 3G and 4G telecom spectrum were auctioned in a highly competitive bidding. The private companies which took part in the auction were Airtel, Aircel, Idea, Tata teleservices, Reliance, S Tel and Vodafone  Essar. Apart from them, state-owned BSNL and MTNL were also awarded spectrum, although they did not participate in the auction. Both these state-owned operators were given a head start by the government in the 3G space by allotting the required 3G spectrum, on the condition that each would pay an amount which would be equivalent to the highest bid in the respective service areas as and when the 3G auctions took place

VSATs are most commonly used to transmit narrowband data (point of sale transactions such as credit card, polling or RFID data; or SCADA), or broadband data (for the provision of satellite Internet access to remote locations, VoIP or video).

On 11^th December, 2008, India entered the 3G arena with the launch of 3G enabled mobile and data services by Government-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) in Delhi and later in Mumbai. After MTNL, another state operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) launched 3G services on 22^nd February, 2009 in Chennai and later launched 3G nationwide. Tata Docomo was the first private company to launch 3G services in India.

The government corporatised the operations wing of DoT on 1 October 2000 and named it as Department of Telecommunication Services (DTS) which was later named as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
It has footprints throughout India except for the metropolitan cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, which are managed by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL).

Indian policy currently states that these broadcasters are assessed a 'One-Time Entry Fee' (OTEF) for the entire license period of 10 years.
