Ethanol can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form, but it is usually used as a gasoline additive to increase octane and improve vehicle emissions. Bioethanol is widely used in USA and in Brazil.

Biodiesel is made from vegetable oils and animal fats. Biodiesel can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form, but it is usually used as a diesel additive to reduce levels of particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons from diesel-powered vehicles. Biodiesel is produced from oils or fats using transesterification and is the most common biofuel in Europe.

The United States leads the world in geothermal electricity production with 3086 MW of installed capacity from 77 power plants. The largest group of geothermal power plants in the world is located at The Geysers, a geothermal field in California. The Philippines is the second highest producer, with 1904 MW of capacity online. Geothermal power makes up approximately 18% of Philippine electricity generation.

Biomass is the biological material from living, or recently living organisms, most often referring to plants or plant-derived materials. As a renewable energy source, biomass can either be used directly or indirectly -- once or converted into another type of energy product such as biofuel. Biomass can be converted to energy in three ways: thermal conversion, chemical conversion and biochemical conversion.

Thermal energy is the energy that determines the temperature of matter. The geothermal energy of the earth's crust originates from the original formation of the planet (20%) and from radioactive decay of minerals (80%). The geothermal gradient, which is the difference in the temperature of the core of the planet and its surface, drives a continuous conduction of thermal energy in the form of heat from the core to the surface.

Delhi Metro has won awards for environment friendly practices from organisations including the United Nations, RINA and the International Organisation for Standardisation, becoming the second metro in the world, after the New York City Subway, to be ISO 14001 certified for environmentally friendly construction.  It is also the first railway project in the world to earn carbon credits after being registered with the United Nations under the Clean Development Mechanism and has so far earned 400,000 carbon credits by saving energy through the use of regenerative braking systems on its trains.

The advanced heavy water reactor (AHWR) is the latest Indian design for a next generation nuclear reactor that will burn thorium in its fuel core. It is slated to form the third stage in India's 3 stage fuel cycle plan.

China is expected to have world's largest Shale Gas reserves.

When jatropha seeds are crushed, the resulting jatropha oil can be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel that can be used in a standard diesel car or further processed into jet fuel, while the residue (press cake) can also be can be used as biomass feedstock to power electricity plants, used as fertilizer (it contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), or as animal fodder. The cake can also be used as feed in digesters and gasifiers to produce biogas.

Hybrid vehicles use a rechargeable energy storage system to supplement fossil fuel energy for vehicle propulsion. Hybrid engines are smaller and more efficient than traditional fuel engines. Some hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking to generate electricity while travelling. A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move the vehicle. The term most commonly refers to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors.

Gujarat has been a leader in solar power generation and contributes 2/3rd of the 900 MW of photovoltaics in the country. The State has commissioned Asia's biggest solar park at Charanka village. The park is already generating 214 MW solar power out of its total planned capacity of 500 MW. The park has been functioning on a multi-developers and multi-beneficiaries paradigm and has been awarded for being the most innovative and environment-friendly project by the CII.
