Pedology (from Greek pedon = soil) is the branch of soil science that studies soil in its natural environment - its formation, classification, morphology, and geographic distribution. Entomology studies insects, aerobiology studies airborne organic particles, and soil biology is a subfield of pedology.

Porosity is defined as the percentage of total soil volume occupied by pore spaces (voids between soil particles). It determines how much air and water the soil can hold. Water holding capacity is related but refers specifically to water retention, not the pore space percentage itself.

Manures add organic matter and nutrients, soil organisms enhance decomposition and nutrient cycling, and afforestation prevents erosion and improves soil structure. Overgrazing degrades soil by removing protective vegetation, compacting the land, and increasing erosion - it harms rather than helps soil quality.

Gravel particles are coarse mineral particles ranging from 2mm to 64mm in diameter. They are larger than sand (0.06-2mm) and much larger than clay particles (less than 0.002mm). The term 'coarse particles' accurately describes gravel's size classification in soil particle size analysis.

A soil profile is a vertical cross-section of soil that shows the horizontal layers (horizons) from the surface down to the parent material. These layers include the O horizon (organic), A horizon (topsoil), B horizon (subsoil), C horizon (weathered rock), and R horizon (bedrock).

The principle is to apply the opposite type of amendment to move pH toward neutral.
