The 1934 World Cup in Italy and the 1938 World Cup in France were the only tournaments without a group stage. Instead, they were straight knockout competitions from the round of 16. The first World Cup in 1930 did have group stages. This format change was made due to time constraints and the growing number of participating nations, but it was reverted after 1938.
