The FIFA World Cup expanded to 32 participating nations starting with the 1998 tournament in France. This was an increase from 24 teams that had participated in the previous three tournaments (1986, 1990, 1994). The expansion allowed more countries from Africa, Asia, and other regions to participate, making it a more truly global event. It remained at 32 teams until the 2026 expansion to 48.
