Benjamin Franklin invented the glass armonica (or harmonica) in 1761, a musical instrument consisting of graduated glass bowls mounted on a horizontal spindle and played by touching them with wet fingers. The banjo has African origins, the oboe and clarinet were developed in Europe earlier. Franklin's instrument became popular in classical music for its ethereal tone.
