Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was a free African-American mathematician, astronomer, and inventor known for his almanacs and role in surveying the boundaries of Washington D.C. He is widely recognized as one of the first African-American inventors and scientists. George Washington Carver, Elijah McCoy, and Bessie Blount came later.
