Elk populations in the United States have experienced dramatic recovery over the past century. From historically low numbers around 1900, conservation efforts including habitat protection, regulated hunting, and reintroduction programs have helped elk populations grow to more than 20 times their historical lows, with current estimates exceeding 1 million elk.
