Bahrain is a constitutional monarchy where the King serves as the head of state. Unlike a presidential system (President) or parliamentary system (Prime Minister as head of state), Bahrain's ruling monarchy has been held by the Al Khalifa family since the 18th century. The Prime Minister heads the government but is not the head of state.
