Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru, founded Amritsar in 1577. He instructed his traders to acquire land and started construction of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in the center of the holy tank, which he named Amritsar (Pool of Nectar). Guru Amar Das was his predecessor, Guru Arjun Dev was his son who completed the temple, and Guru Har Gobind was his grandson.
