Facundo Bacardi Masso founded Bacardi in 1862 in Santiago de Cuba. He was a wine merchant from Spain who immigrated to Cuba and developed a unique method for producing smooth rum using charcoal filtration and oak barrel aging. The company remained family-owned for generations and became the largest rum producer in the world.
