Newborn kangaroos (joeys) are born at an extremely undeveloped stage, measuring only about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length. This tiny size is because they leave the womb very early and must crawl to the mother's pouch to continue development. A newborn kangaroo is essentially a fetus, weighing less than a gram at birth.
