Aragog is an Acromantula - a giant, intelligent species of spider capable of human speech. Unlike regular spiders, Acromantulas are massive, can speak, and often live in colonies. Hagrid raised Aragog from an egg, and Aragog eventually founded the colony of Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest. A basilisk is a giant serpent, and giants and owls are entirely different creatures.
