Oysters are protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning they start life as males and can change to females, and in some species can change back multiple times during their lifespan. This sequential hermaphroditism allows them to maximize reproductive efficiency by changing gender when it provides an evolutionary advantage. Whales, penguins, and owls do not change gender.
