The island of Santorini (ancient Thera) in the Aegean Sea was home to a thriving Minoan settlement at Akrotiri. The catastrophic volcanic eruption around 1600 BCE destroyed the civilization, possibly giving rise to Plato's legend of Atlantis. The eruption created the iconic caldera and was one of the largest in human history.
