According to Ramayana tradition, Punjikhastala was a celestial nymph (apsara) in Indra's court who was cursed to be born as a monkey and become Hanuman's mother, Anjana. The curse was a result of either disrespecting a sage or an improper action, depending on the version. Anjana performed severe penance to beget Hanuman as a son, who would be an avatar of Lord Shiva.
