Dr. Zakir Hussain, India's third President serving from 1967 to 1969, was the first Indian President to die in office. His death on May 3, 1969, created a constitutional crisis that led to the appointment of V.V. Giri as acting President. B.D. Jatti served as acting President later, while Mohd. Hidayatullah was also an acting President, but none of them died while holding the office.
