Basalt is the most common rock type found in Earth's crust, particularly in the oceanic crust which covers about 70% of Earth's surface. It forms from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava and makes up the majority of the ocean floor. Continental crust has more varied composition, but overall basalt dominates Earth's rock volume.
