Ghana was formerly known as the Gold Coast during British colonial rule, referring to the gold trade that flourished in the region. The country adopted the name Ghana upon independence in 1957, inspired by the ancient Ghana Empire. Zaire is the old name of DR Congo, Vanuatu and Kirghizia (Kyrgyzstan) are different countries entirely.
