Germany was divided after World War II into West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) and East Germany (German Democratic Republic) from 1949 to 1990. The Berlin Wall, constructed in 1961, physically separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany, becoming the most visible symbol of the Cold War division. The wall fell on November 9, 1989, and Germany was officially reunited on October 3, 1990. Guatemala, Greece, and Ghana were never divided by a Berlin Wall.
