In the popular legend of Anarkali and Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir), Anarkali was a courtesan with whom Salim fell in love. The story, made famous by the 1960 film 'Mughal-e-Azam', depicts their forbidden romance and the tragic consequence ordered by Emperor Akbar. While historical evidence for Anarkali is debated, the legend firmly associates her with Salim.
