A MacGuffin is a plot device where the characters pursue an object or goal that drives the story but has little intrinsic value or importance to the actual plot. Alfred Hitchcock popularized this technique in many of his films, like the microfilm in North by Northwest. The audience cares about the pursuit, not the object itself.
