John Shepherd-Barron, a Scottish inventor, developed the first automated teller machine (ATM) in the 1960s. His invention was inspired by a machine dispensing chocolate bars, and he conceived the idea of a 24-hour self-service banking machine. The first ATM was installed in London in 1967.
