Aryabhatta, the ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer (476-550 CE), is credited with the concept of zero as a number. Zero as a placeholder existed earlier in Babylonian mathematics, but Aryabhatta formalized it as a mathematical concept. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, not zero.
