Takshila (Taxila) is considered the world's first university, established around 700 BCE in ancient India (now Pakistan). It attracted students from across Asia and world-renowned scholars like Chanakya. While Nalanda and other ancient centers like Ujjain and Kashi were important, Takshila predates them.
