Buddhist literary works were primarily written in Pali, particularly the Theravada Buddhist canon known as the Tripitaka. Sanskrit was used for Hindu texts and later Buddhist Mahayana literature, while Prakrit was used for Jain texts. Pali was the language of early Buddhist teachings and scriptures.
