Cincinnati, Ohio is historically known as the 'Queen City' - a nickname it acquired in the 19th century when it was the largest and most prosperous city in the West (at that time meaning west of the Appalachians). The city was a major river port and industrial center, earning this regal designation even before the similar 'Queen City of the Plains' nickname for Denver. The name remains in use today.
