Maps based on Ptolemy's Geographia were reconstructed from his coordinate system and geographical descriptions, forming the foundation of cartographic knowledge for over 1,500 years. These maps introduced latitude/longitude grids and systematic mapping principles. The Piri Reis, Fra Mauro, and Cantino maps are all post-classical creations from the 15th-16th centuries and were not based on Ptolemy's work.
