Chennai Pattinam was named after Damarla Chennaipa Nayaka, a Vijayanagara ruler who controlled the area in the 17th century. The Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple also contributed to the naming, as 'Chenna' in Tamil relates to the face of the deity. Both the historical figure (Chennaiappa Naicker) and the temple are valid origins of the name.
