Who was the first player to sent off while playing for England?

Alan Mullery became the first England player to be sent off in an international match on June 22, 1974, against Yugoslavia in a UEFA Euro 1976 qualifier. This was before red cards were introduced; he was actually ordered off by the referee. William Cropper played in the 19th century, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs were sent off much later (Beckham in 1998, Giggs for Wales).
