Japan is known as the Land of the Rising Sun because the sun rises over the Japanese archipelago before it does in neighboring Asian countries, and Japan is east of the Asian mainland. This nickname is reflected in Japan's very name in Japanese (Nippon/Nihon) which literally means the sun's origin. Nepal, Bhutan, and Germany are not associated with this epithet.
