Deccan Chargers (now defunct, replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad) won IPL 2009 under captain Gilchrist, turning around their last-place finish in 2008. The tournament was held in South Africa. Bangalore Royal Challengers were runners-up, while Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings would win in later seasons.
