Kolkata (then Calcutta) became the first Indian city to have a metro rail system when the Kolkata Metro started operations in 1984. It was also the first underground railway system in India. The project was conceived earlier but faced delays. Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi Metro systems came much later - Delhi Metro began in 2002.
