Abu Salem, a key figure in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2002. After a complex three-year legal battle involving extradition requests from both India and Portugal, he was extradited to India in November 2005. His extradition was a major victory for Indian security agencies and marked the end of a 13-year hunt for one of India's most wanted criminals.
