Quantum mechanics is the fundamental theory in physics that describes nature at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles. It developed from two key principles: Planck's quantum principle (energy is quantized) and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (we cannot simultaneously know a particle's exact position and momentum). Unlike general relativity (which describes gravity on cosmic scales) or Hawking radiation (a specific phenomenon about black holes), quantum mechanics deals with the probabilistic behavior of particles and waves at the microscopic level.
