The massive height and rugged terrain of the Himalaya Mountains acted as a natural barrier, making it extremely difficult for enemy armies to invade India from the north. While the mountains do feed rivers, they do not directly provide roads, fertile farmland, or a constant water supply to the entire region in the way a river valley does.
