At a transform fault, tectonic plates slide horizontally past one another. This lateral movement causes friction and earthquakes, such as along the San Andreas Fault, but does not create or destroy crust. Pushing into each other occurs at convergent boundaries, while pulling apart occurs at divergent boundaries.
