What is widely accepted as the first work of science fiction?

Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein is widely accepted by literary scholars as the first true work of science fiction. Unlike earlier fantastical tales, the central plot revolves around a scientist using scientific methods (rather than magic or alchemy) to create life, exploring the consequences of scientific hubris. Other works like The Time Machine and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were published much later in the 19th century.
