In 1882, Gilbert Thompson of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) used his own thumbprint on payroll checks and camp orders to prevent forgery. This is recognized as the first documented official use of fingerprints for identification purposes in the United States. It demonstrated a practical, early application of fingerprint security.
