Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition caused by insufficient protein intake, characterized by bilateral edema, particularly a swollen or bulging abdomen (ascites). Marasmus, on the other hand, is caused by a severe deficiency of all macronutrients (calories) and is characterized by wasting without edema.
