Karate originated in Okinawa, which is part of Japan. The martial art developed from indigenous fighting methods and Chinese martial arts brought to Okinawa. It was formalized and popularized in Japan proper during the early 20th century before spreading globally. While other Asian countries also have martial arts traditions, karate specifically is Japanese in origin.
