Ancient Indian cave shrines, such as those at Ajanta and Ellora, were hand-carved directly out of solid rock cliffs to serve as sacred temples and monasteries. They were not natural caves, but rather highly engineered and artistically sculpted religious sites. Their primary purpose was worship and monastic life rather than general learning or writing poetry.
