What material did Indian artists use to construct large outdoor monuments?

Ancient Indian artists and builders primarily used stone to construct large, durable outdoor monuments, such as temples, stupas, and rock-cut pillars. Materials like wood and plaster were less durable and did not survive the elements as well as stone. Metal was used for smaller sculptures and details rather than entire large monuments.
